Is it possible to communicate through light ? Li-Fi Technology


We are living in a high tech world, everywhere we can see Engineers. We are for making new technology .Some technologies came from inspiration of Nature, for example , Velcro ,Gecko Skin ,whale fin wind-turbine,shark skin,bullet train kingfisher ,etc.. . so around us we can see millions of light producing objects ,so is it possible to communicate through light? The science says yes and it’s called “ Li-Fi ” . Li-Fi is nothing but just innovation of Wi-Fi. Li-Fi stands for Light Fidelity , which means communicate through light. Harlad Haas, who teaches at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, coined the term “Li-Fi” at his TED Global Talk where he introduced the idea of “Wireless data from every light”. He was the chairman of mobile communications at University of Edinburgh and co-founder of pureLi-Fi . The general term visible light communication (VLC), whose history dates back to the 1880s, includes any use of the visible light portion of the electromagnetic spectrum to transmit information. The D-Light project at Edinburgh’s Institute for Digital Communications was funded from January 2010 to January 2012. Haas promoted this technology in his 2011 TED Global talk and helped start a company to market it. PureLiFi, formerly pureVLC, is an original equipment manufacture (OEM) firm set up to commercialize Li-Fi products for integration with existing LED-lighting systems.

In October 2011, companies and industry groups formed the Li-Fi Consortium, to promote high-speed optical wireless systems and to overcome the limited amount of radio-based wireless spectrum available by exploiting a completely different part of the electromagnetic spectrum.

A number of companies offer uni-directional VLC products, which is not the same as Li-Fi – a term defined by the IEEE 802.15.7r1 standardization committee.

VLC technology was exhibited in 2012 using Li-Fi. By August 2013, data rates of over 1.6 Gbit/s were demonstrated over a single color LED. In September 2013, a press release said that Li-Fi, or VLC systems in general, do not require line-of-sight conditions. In October 2013, it was reported Chinese manufacturers were working on Li-Fi development kits.

In April 2014, the Russian company Stins Coman announced the development of a Li-Fi wireless local network called Beam Caster. Their current module transfers data at 1.25 gigabytes per second but they foresee boosting speeds up to 5 GB/second in the near future. In 2014 a new record was established by Sisoft (a Mexican company) that was able to transfer data at speeds of up to 10 Gbit/s across a light spectrum emitted by LED lamps.

Li-Fi is a best technology to transmit datas,but how does LiFi internet source transmit the network to the devices?well, Through Light of course. The source can be the Tube Light or the Bulb placed in your room. As soon as you turn it on, you get access to the wireless visible optical network everywhere inside your room. It’s network coverage area is everywhere inside your room. So if you are under the light, it means you are receiving the network.

Many people asked me is Li-Fi secure? Well, technically speaking, LiFi does not have any security mechanisms, but don’t panic, because it does not need any. Because Light cannot penetrate through walls to reach outside your workstation. And so, rest assured, it won’t be able to reach your neighbor in any ways. Practically it is more secure than a Wifi because even a Wifi can be hacked, but a Lifi is not accessible at all outside, thereby barring the hackers from the root! Bye Bye Hackers! . Next advantage is speed. You can watch and download videos in no time. Browse new websites in a blink. But, Despite being extremely powerful network, it has some small operational disadvantages. To use the network, we need to keep the lights on all the time 24×7. And this generation is hooked to internet all the time, so it is expected that the bulbs and the tubes will glow in the daytime too unnecessarily thereby wasting lot of power. Also, you cannot enjoy playing online games or watching YouTube videos in a dark room or on bed at night time when you prefer to turn off the lights. Even low light won’t work, as it may slow the network. But comparing with Wi-Fi , Both of them are wireless network connections but the former has a whooping speed hike than the latter. Lifi is 100 times faster than the conventional Wifi network. Lifi does not require password protection like Wifi, as the light source is bound not to get hacked, as it is confined within the room of operation. Wifi networks require wifi hotspot system which is entirely abandoned in Li-Fi.

Li-Fi can be used in traffic, Aircraft cabins, Hospitals , Educational institutes , etc.. .some people asked me about the scope for Li-Fi?. Light is everywhere, light will not create any harm to nature . since the speed was an attractive feature people will use Li-Fi and later , million-million light bulbs will become million-million Li-Fi hotspot.
